BA vs BS

Overview

B.A. Degree

The B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) degree is the main liberal arts degree at Lehigh. Many departments in the College of Arts and Sciences offer B.A. programs, along with some interdisciplinary programs. At Lehigh, you earn a Bachelor of Arts in Arts and Sciences with a major in a specific subject. Instead of a "B.A. in Music," you earn a B.A. in Arts and Sciences with a major in Music.

Most B.A. programs require around 30–40 credits, leaving plenty of room for free electives. You can use these electives to explore different subjects, add a second major, or pick up a minor (or even multiple credentials). The B.A. is great if you want flexibility in your studies.

B.S. Degree

The B.S. (Bachelor of Science) degree is offered in Computer Science, Mathematics, Psychology, Statistics, and each of the natural sciences. Unlike the B.A., a B.S. is more specialized. You earn a B.S. in Astrophysics rather than a general "B.S. in Arts and Sciences."

B.S. programs are ideal for students who want a deeper focus on their major and related courses (for example, a Earth and Environmental Sciences major might also take chemistry and math). While a B.S. has fewer free electives than a B.A., you still have some flexibility to explore other interests.

Which One is Right for You?

  • Choose a B.A. if you want more flexibility to explore different subjects or add extra credentials.
  • Choose a B.S. if you prefer a more structured program with a deeper focus on your major.

Either way, both degrees offer a strong foundation for your future!
